The Aztecs were a Mesoamerican civilization known for their capital city, Tenochtitlan, built on Lake Texcoco. They excelled in agriculture, astronomy, and art. Their society was hierarchical, with powerful priests and rulers. They practiced human sacrifice to appease their gods, notably Huitzilopochtli. Spanish conquest led to their downfall in the 16th century.
