In the southern regions of Mexico between Oaxaca and Chiapas lives the Xalorin people. They are deeply connected to the earth and known for their living settlements made from carefully guided plant structures. Their homes grow over generations as root systems intertwine and form organic living spaces. Xalorin culture is strongly based on color. Natural pigments from plants and minerals are used for clothing and body markings. Each color carries meaning, representing family lines, life stages, and personal experiences. Local traditions link the Xalorin to ancient indigenous root cultures with deep knowledge of plants and ecosystems. Many of their settlements are difficult to reach and blend seamlessly into the natural environment. A central celebration is the Blühende Tiefe, a festival honoring the bond between humans and the earth. It is marked by dance, music, and plant based rituals. Today the Xalorin are seen as an example of sustainable living in harmony with nature.
